Identity and Independence in The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman :: Yellow Wallpaper essays

Although "The Yellow Wall-Paper" is fiction, it can be considered almost like Gilman's autobiography since Gilman's life seemed to parallel her main character's life.   What Gilman was trying to express in this work is women's fight for identity and independence (professional work) which are stripped from them by marriage and motherhood. (p799)   In the story, a woman who just gave birth had some complications which resulted in her so called "hysteria" or nervous condition.   She's not allowed to do anything but stare at some yellow wall-paper until she ultimately   loses her mind. The narrator, who will be referred to as Gilman for simplicity's sake, is a   writer who is unable to write due to her motherhood.   "I did write for a while in spite of them; but it does   exhaust me a good deal-" (p801)   It was this motherhood that brought her illness so she couldn't write.   This shows how just being a woman is difficult to have a career.   Her husband, John, always tried to keep her in her room without anything to do but recover from her illness.   Without anything to do, especially her writing, Gilman saw this as being held back from becoming her true self. "John is a physician, and perhaps ...perhaps that is one reason I do not get well faster." (p801) She had to be sneaky about writing or else John would find out.   "-having to be so sly about it, or else meet with heavy opposition." (p801)   Because of this "prison" that she was in,   Gilman started to see images in the yellow wall-paper that she stared at day-in and day-out. The images she "saw" were a woman, and then women trapped behind the yellow wall-paper.   "The woman behind shakes it!   Sometimes I think there are a great many women behind... Then in the very bright spots she keeps still, and the very shady spots she just takes hold of the bars and shakes them hard." (p809)   The image of the woman and women is how Gilman feels about her and every other woman during this time period.   By being a woman and married, she became sick and imprisoned much like her women images. The bars that the woman shook are Gilman's motherhood and marriage; her freedom would be her independence from John and her writings.   At the end of the story, John faints at the site of Gilman "creeping" around the

Running head: ANCIENT GREEKS AND ROMANS Comparison and Contrast of Greeks and Romans World Civilization 1 HIS 103 There were many different cultures and civilizations in the ancient world. Each of the cultures had their own customs and ethnology that either set them apart from the rest of the world or rendered them similar. Two civilizations that have a multitude of similarities as well as differences are the Greeks and the Romans. In the eyes of some, the Greeks and Romans are synonymous. While they do have their share of similarities, they also have defining characteristics that make them extraordinarily different.The Greeks and the Romans are similar and different in many aspects including religion, social/political aspects, influence of geographical factors and the lasting effect they have had on later civilizations. Abraham Lincoln once said, â€Å"When I do good, I feel good; when I do bad, I feel bad. That’s my religion. † If only the Greeks and Romans thought of Religion with such simplicity. Both ancient Roman and Greek civilizations took their religion very seriously and built temples and shrines showing their appreciation to the gods. Religion was a very important aspect of Greek society and culture.They participated in sacrifices and regular worships of gods for the purpose of unifying the people in a common goal to please the Gods. The Greeks were a polytheistic civilization and believed that their gods would protect their city-states if they were kept appeased. The Greeks pleased their gods by frequently performing rituals, sacrifices and ceremonies. Greek religion was more than legendary tales and fictitious myths; it was a complex organization with each city-state containing its own divinities, which acted to cement the body of citizens into a true community [ (O'Connell, 1999) ].In this concept, the Romans were similar. They also were polytheistic and very concerned about appeasing their gods. The Romans were great copiers. They b orrowed many of their gods from the Greeks, but unlike Greek gods, they were more cold and formal and did not have as much of a personality. The Romans lived under the gods and constantly tried to please them with rituals and sacred rites. The Romans also performed human and animal sacrifices in addition to the ceremonies. Over the years, these rituals became very complex and needed special people to perform them.Unlike the Greeks, the Romans had priests who were usually distinguished statesmen or generals. Roman religion and politics were intermeshed, and it was not uncommon for the emperor (during the empire period) to be worshipped as a god himself [ (O'Connell, 1999) ]. Because the Greeks were divided into many different city-states, they had many different forms of government. Aristotle divided the Greek governments into monarchies, oligarchies, tyrannies and democracies. In 510 B. C. he city-state of Athens created the first democratic government and shortly thereafter, the re st of the city-states followed suit [ (Carr, Ancient Greek Government, 2009) ]. They no longer had one single leader as the Romans did. Rome was originally ruled by kings, in a monarchal system. After this time period known as the Ancient Roman period, the Roman Republic was formed in 509 BC. The Roman Republic provided for a more representative government. Roman imperialism created a sizable gap in wealth and social classes within Rome.With such power and wealth, there was great economic as well as social conflict. The noblemen of Rome were constantly fighting for more wealth as small farm owners suffered when large plantations were being formed with slaves. The Roman nobles were fighting for greed and personal wealth creating extensive conflicts in Rome. Despite the conflict, the development of political institutions was one of Rome’s greatest accomplishments [ (Carr, 2009) ]. As the documentary source Histories: The Roman Constitution clearly exemplifies, the Romans had a very effective political system.As Polybius states in this excerpt, â€Å"For the people is the sole fountain of honor and of punishment; and it is by these two things and these alone that dynasties and constitutions and in a word, human society are held together: for where the distinction between them is not sharply drawn both in theory and practice, there no undertaking can be properly administered – as indeed we might expect when good and bad are held in exactly the same honor. † It is clear that the Roman constitution is equally balanced in power, and has contributed to the strength of the Roman ivilization [ (Sherman, Grunfeld, Markowitz, Rosner, & Heywood, 2006) ]. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, â€Å"Men hate each other because they fear each other, and they fear each other because they don’t know each other, and they don’t know each other because they are often separated from each other. † The many ancient Greek city states were isol ated from one another by the mountainous terrain of the Greek peninsula. Much of their land was barren so most Greek city-states arose along the coastline. Map 4-2 clearly shows the extent of Greek settlements around the Mediterranean and Black Seas between 750 and 550 B.C. E. It exemplifies the Greek civilization by illustrating the location of the Greek colonies in comparison to the competing Phoenician colonies that the Greeks often came into contact with. It also shows the importance of colonies for diffusing culture throughout the Mediterranean and explains how Greek and Greco-Roman civilization came to dominate most of the Mediterranean basin even when the Greeks were no longer a great military-political force and their colonies ceased to be independent. Because the Greeks were surrounded by mountains, they were not as open to attack as the Romans were.Map 5-1 clearly shows some of the civilizations that occupied Italy and its immediately surrounding territory during the fifth century B. C. E. It further exemplifies the Roman civilization by illustrating the many influences other civilizations had upon the Roman Republic. Before Rome became a dominant power, the Etruscans, Carthaginians and Greeks all ready had strong literate sophisticated civilizations. As Rome expanded, many of the institutions and practices of these civilizations were incorporated into their civilization.Therefore, Rome’s geographic and cultural environment played an important role in the development of the Roman Republic [ (Sherman, Grunfeld, Markowitz, Rosner, & Heywood, 2006) ]. The Roman and Greek cultures have long been admired for their literature, government and scientific accomplishments. They have not only left their foot prints on later civilizations, but they continue to be studied and admired all around the world today. Greece was home to Herodotus (the first historian) who is regarded as the father of history. Greece is also ecognized for accomplishments such as t he initial development of dramatic and comedic plays, and for being the home of the first mathematicians. In addition, Greece contributed many developments in political science including the creation of democracy and republics and the fundamentals of classical western philosophy, as found in the works of Plato and Aristotle [ (Conservapedia, 2008) ]. In The Republic as written by Plato, democracy is scrutinized. This literary work exemplifies the Greek civilization by illustrating how democracy was implemented, yet also met with resistance and criticism.Plato says â€Å"Because of the liberty which reigns there – they have a complete assortment of constitutions; and he who has a mind to establish a State, as we have been doing, must go to a democracy as he would to a bazaar at which they sell them, and pick out the one that suits him; then, when he has made his choice, he may found his State. † It is clear that Plato did not hold the Athenian form of democracy in highe st regards [ (Sherman, Grunfeld, Markowitz, Rosner, & Heywood, 2006) ]. The Romans contributed just as much as the Greeks did.Their styles of architecture are still used around the world today. Most importantly, Christianity arose and was adopted as the official faith of the Roman Empire. Although it contradicted Roman civilization by insisting that there is only one God, it still continued to spread throughout Rome and much of Europe. The Roman Republic conquered Greece in 146 BC. They took much of the Greek religion and incorporated it into their own until the 4th century CE when Christianity prevailed. The Greco-Roman population in the seventeenth century did much to shape the contemporary western world.The philosophy focused strictly on the role of reason and inquiry. Many philosophers today concede that Greco–Roman philosophy has shaped the entire Western thought since its foundation. Their architecture styles are still used as well as the democratic form of government w hich is used not only in Europe but all around the world. Seventeenth century Greco-Roman literature is still renowned, studied by historians and taught in schools all over the world. Greek and Roman contributions to the contemporary world are great in both number and significance.Their advancements in mathematics, architecture, science, philosophy, government and literature not only advanced their own civilizations but the world as a whole. Humanity has benefited greatly from the contributions of the Greeks and Romans. The world would be an entirely different place if the Romans and Greeks had not existed. The Greeks and Romans have existed in the world as separate entities and also as one community. Because they have been so intermingled, in some ways they are parallel.The Greeks and the Romans are similar and different in many aspects including religion, social/political aspects, influence of geographical factors and the lasting effect they have had on later civilizations. The Gr eek and Roman civilizations were some of the greatest civilizations to evolve. They mutually succeeded in showing other civilizations both how to succeed and how to fail at the things which men might try. Both civilizations had their peaks and their declines. While these two great civilizations continue to present their similarities, they also are extensively different.Just like many countries today have their similarities and also their differences. Despite the many technological and societal advances achieved by societies today, wars still continue to ravage the world. That fact has not changed. The lymphatic system is the bodies’ drainage network that keeps the bodily fluid balanced and also fights off infections to keep he body healthy. The lymphatic system is made up of a variety of lymphatic vessels and organs. The vessels for one pick up extra fluid and return it to the bloodstream. Secondly, the lacteals receive lipoproteins and then the lymphatic vessels transport these fats also to the bloodstream. Throughout history gender has played a defining role in the structure and function of civilizations all over the world. Women were usually deemed as inferior to men in most nations thus leading to a plethora of unfair treatment and social unrest. There were, however, various times in history when women actually stood up for their rights as human beings and spoke out against these atrocities. An example of this is the story of Abina, a young African woman who was unlawfully enslaved in 1876. She made the courageous decision to run away and speak out against her master in court despite insurmountable odds. Most of them show signs of emotional problems which later develop into mental and other psychological illnesses. Parents and guardians need to develop very close relationship with their children. This helps in earl identification of any uncommon signs in children. By so doing, these problems can easily be prevented through proper medication and recommendations from a legal health practitioner. Research indicate that most parents tend to bring up their children alone. This means that they do not seek medical help from hospitals. Doctors have always recommended that infants be taken to medical facility from birth date up to the time when they become close to three years. During this period, children are immunized and given drugs that help them grow first, healthy and of sound mind. This helps prevent children from falling sick frequently and from contacting some contagious diseases easily. Children who are not born in hospitals or taken to hospitals immediately after birth, therefore, risk suffering from diseases that could have been controlled and prevented. According to a report by world health organisation, majority of children who develop mental complications at tender age were not immunized against diseases immediately after birth. Emotional Problems in Infants and Preschool Children Parents need to know early if their children have emotional disorders. This is important because early detection will mean early treatment, hence eradication of the disorder. Children can easily be observed during play time with other children. This is the time when the parents need to be very observant of their children (Akca, et al, 2012). Children whose needs are not provided may become angry due to emotional charges in the body(Falceto, et al, 2012). Parenting research conducted by Thomas Coram in the year 2010 shows that parental affection given to children at tender age contribute so much to what the child become of in his or her older age (Flouri, et al, 2015). Parents on the other hand need not be stressed up or have a feeling of distress. This as well affects the bonding between parents and their children, which psychologically affects childrens emotions (Hornman, et al, 2016). Behavioural Problems in Infants and Preschool Children Children raised and brought up in some areas behaves differently compared to those raised in other places. The behaviours also change depending on whether the child is raised by the parents or guardians. Turkey researchers on children behaviours has revealed that children who cry most of the time, do not eat as required and those who have a problem during sleeping time, may end up developing behavioural problems when they become older (Lianne, et al, 2017). According to the research, 70% of those children develop depression and anxiety after a while. There are many behavioural problems in children and so can be categorised into the following five categories. Sleeping disorders Children of a certain age are required to sleep not more than a specific number of hours. According to medical research, children who are between the ages of one and three months need to sleep quarter of a day probably mid night. It should be noted that parental influence and environmental factors may contribute to the type of sleeping that a child may be having (Yrmez, et al, 2014). Psychological disorders Inconsistent parenting style, child neglect or abuse, bereavement and injury are some of the factors that may cause psychological disorders in children. Reaction to these factors may not immediate, but they will surely be displayed by the victim children. Parents need to guide their children to always anticipate what might come in future. Children who are of older age also have their ways of showing psychological disturbances (Raya, et al, 2011). Some of which include poor performance in their learning institutions, some will distance themselves from family members and friends, while others will avoid eating for a certain duration. Such children need to be advised properly and be given close care. This is because once such problems persist for long, it might result to a serious psychological problem that may not be easily control or treated (Salari, et al, 2014). Anxiety disorder It is normal practise for young children to be fearful of some situations. However, if the same is carried to older age, the result might be a negative one. Anxiety disorders may result into psychological problems that can easily lead the child to a psychologist for medical attention. Research points out that six in every ten children are anxious about something (Smith, et al, 2010). A third of the six may become over anxious and this is why children need to be near parental figure anytime for advice, guidance, encouragement and so on. Habit disorders Habit disorder can be referred to as tension reducing. The table below shows tension reducing habits. Some are temporary while others need medical attention depending on the persistence and the side effects that come as a result of the behaviour. It should be noted that children learn most of the things at young age. This means that they might be engaged in behavioural activities just to copy what adults are doing. It is, therefore, important that adults watch what they are doing near children. Expert advice informs us that children who are engaged in head banging mostly do so when they are alone (Torres, et al, 2015). This reiterates the importance of being close children and always watching their actions and behaviours. Disruptive behaviours Holding breath while breathing and tantrums in children causes frustrations and anger. This is because children are not able control their environment. Parents and caregivers are advised to always ignore children at that time so that they learn self-control. However, parents need to be keen on any antisocial behaviour in their children. This is not normal and there will be a need to get close to the child and give proper advice if possible, and may be introduce other age mates to the child so that his or her social skills may develop as well (van der Veen-Mulders, et al, 2017). Research Methodology For the purpose of this study, primary data is collected with the help of a questionnaire. A total of 126 participants were selected randomly for the collection of the data. Each of the 126 participants were provided with the questionnaire and the responses of the participants of this study were recorded as data. Most of the data points are qualitative in nature as they record the opinions of the respondents on several behaviours of them and their children. The qualitative data points are expressed numerically and analysis will be performed with the help of appropriate statistical techniques. The analysis will be conducted with the help of the statistical software SPSS version 20. The results of the analysis are discussed in detail in the following section. Data Analysis and Results It has been seen already from the discussion above that most of the infants and preschool children nowadays suffer from emotional and behavioural problems. The possible reasons behind these problems will be discussed in this section. Several factors for family assessments have been asked to the respondents. Questions such as how the problems of the children are solved by the family, how the family communicates with their children, what is their role in controlling their children, how they care for their children, how they control the behaviours of their children were asked and the responses on these matters were summarized. It has been tested whether there is any difference in the assessments run by the family based on the type of symptom their children show. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test has been conducted to test this claim. From the results of the analysis (Table 1), it can be said that significant differences between the assessment scores of the families has been observed on the basis of the type of symptoms (sig value 0.136 level of significance). Further, it can be seen that (Figure 1) the children suffering from speech delay suffer the most from the emotional and the behavioural problems in their chil dhood. The next factor that has been tested is whether there is a relationship between the children showing the symptoms and the children and their parents affected by the emotional and behavioural problems. To test this, regression analysis has been conducted. It can be seen from the results of the regression analysis (Table 3) that 72.3 percent of the children showing the symptoms of emotional and behavioural problems suffer from these problems. From table 4, it can be seen that the results of the analysis are significant. Thus, from here it can be said that the children showing symptoms of these problems might be taken special care of. Especially care from their parents are important for the kids to overcome this behavioural problem. On the other hand, it has also been seen that the child with problem of speech shows the symptoms for behavioural and emotional problems. The reason behind this can be such that these kids are unable to express their feelings as other normal kids do. This leads to depression in some of the kids which results in such behavioural problems. Conclusion Activities that parents and caregivers allow their children to engage in determines their (children) behaviours at a later age. Parents can either make their children behave well or ruin the psychological makeup of children. Psychological practitioners do advise parents to always be close to their children so as to take not of any weird behaviour in children and take a recommended step. Parents should be friendly and approachable. This makes children to stay close to them and tell them most things happening to them. This means that parents need to be responsive and sensitive on matters that mention their children. Responsiveness also help improve the mother child relationship which is good for the mental development of children. As per the research, young infants need to be born in medical facilities or be taken to the medical facilities immediately after birth. The doctors will administer drugs that help the child control her or his movement as he or she grows older. The drugs also help boost the immune system of the child thus preventing the child from contacting contagious diseases which act as stimulants in making children behave in a certain way. While in school, the preschool children need to be watched as well since they play and interact with other children of diverse backgrounds. Some of these students might be suffering from emotional and behavioural problems as well. There is, therefore, a reason for tutors, who are also psychological experts to teach children at preschool level. The tutor in question will as well be in a position to give advice to the parents so that they (parents) become oriented with what to do in case of any unfamiliar behaviours from their children. This means that there will be a continuous cycle of mentorship and training at all level where information might be lacking.
